Basic Skin Care Guide

Looking after your skin could never be easier just follow these simple steps for healthier looking skin. Start with steps 1 to 3 for a basic skincare routine and then extend it out with steps 4 to 6.

1. Cleanse

Why:

Cleansing helps to remove the dirt, grime and excess oils that build up on the skin every day. Men tend to have larger pores and oilier skin than women so cleansing is all the more important. Excess build up of dirt and oil can lead to blemishes, blackheads and other skin problems.

Avoid regular soap as they often contain harsh ingredients and fragrance which can over dry your skin. Instead opt for a facial cleansing bar or a facial wash.

When:

Use twice a day. In the morning (before shaving) and at night.

How:

Gently massage into a wet face and rinse off with warm water. Cleansing can even be done in the shower.

2. Tone

Why:

Toning helps to remove left-over dirt and oil after using a cleanser and clears the skin of any shaving residue. It closes the pores and rebalances the skins pH level to leave it feeling refreshed.

Highly recommended for oily and combination skin but optional for dry or sensitive skin.

When:

Use twice a day. In the morning (after shaving but before applying aftershave balm) and at night (after cleansing).

How:

Use with a cotton pad to wipe over the face and neck.

3. Moisturise

Why:

Moisturising helps to rehydrate and condition the skin. It replaces lost moisture to keep skin soft and supple and stop that tight and uncomfortable feeling.

Especially important for those with dry skin. Choose an oil-free moisturiser for oily skin.

When:

Use twice a day. In the morning (after applying aftershave balm) and at night (after toning).

How:

Apply a small amount onto face and neck in an upward direction.

4. Exfoliate

Why:

Exfoliating involves deep down cleansing to remove dead skin cells and to further unclog pores. Helps to release ingrown hairs and smooth the skins surface. Use a facial scrub or deep cleansing mask to exfoliate.

Scrubs are similar to cleansers but contain tiny granules (nuts, shells or beads etc) to buff away impurities and dead surface cells. Masks come in two types:

  • exfoliating mask that absorbs excess oils and draws out in-grain dirt and debris. These often contain bentonite or kaolin clay and a left to dry hard on your face.
  • rehydrating mask that nourishes the skin by replenishing lost moisture. These are often creams or gels that do not dry hard on your face.

When:

Replace your cleanser with a facial scrub 2-3 times a week. Use a mask 1-2 times a week.

How:

With a facial scrub, gently massage into a wet face using circular motions and rinse off. With a mask, apply a thin layer to the face avoiding the eye and lip area. Allow to dry for 10-15 minutes and then wash off with warm water.

Nowadays, most moisturisers contain SPF sunscreen enabling you to moisture and protect your skin at the same time.
